Pastoral Letter | Evening Service Cancelled [May 31]
Dearest Christ Church Family,
Warm Lord’s Day greetings! In our worship service this morning we read those profoundly comforting words from Psalm 90— “Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” (v. 1-2) Many challenges have plagued the world over the course of generations, but none of these challenges are outside of God’s providence. Indeed, through them all our loving God is on His sovereign throne. He does all that He pleases, and nothing can thwart His eternal purposes. This includes the COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest, and various personal struggles that we are all facing. From everlasting to everlasting our God is God; and that, of course, includes our current moment. Therefore, in light of all that’s going on, let’s not shrink back in fear or rise up in rage. Rather, let’s go forth in faith, hope, and love— always remembering that Christ gave His life for us, and we are His treasured possession.
Due to the various early curfews that are being established in the Charleston area, along with the closure of the Cooper River Bridge, the elders deemed it prudent and wise to cancel our evening service tonight. I was very much looking forward to preaching my introductory sermon on “The Christian Family”, but it will have to wait until next Lord’s Day.
However, we, the elders, would like to encourage you to take time this evening with your family to read together Romans chapter 8 and Psalm 23, and to spend some time in prayer for our congregation, our lowcountry region, our nation, our law enforcement and government officials. Pray for healing as it concerns racial divides in our nation. Pray for the church’s faithful witness in the midst of these tumultuous times. Pray, in light of this morning’s sermon, that Christ Church would be faithful to fulfill the Great Commission in Charleston and around the world.
We will continue with our in-person evening worship service next Lord’s Day. I’m already looking forward to it. If you have any needs please do not hesitate to reach out to me or one of the other leaders.
Your Pastor, Servant, and Friend
