The Christ Church reading challenge is back! Many of you have participated in my curated monthly reading schedule in the past. For others, however, this will be new. The reading challenge is a simple way to stimulate godly reading in our congregation, and to turn attention away from the ubiquitous screens that too often tyrannize (and shape!) our lives. Moreover, it’s a strategy to introduce our congregation to quality books and trustworthy authors.

In his fantastic book, The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction (Oxford University Press: 2011), Alan Jacobs reflects on the fact that the introduction of the television in the 1940’s, and the computer in the 1970’s, contributed significantly to the decline of book reading over the past 75 years. Of course, the recent technological advances leading to the creation of the iPhone, social media, and online streaming services have led to increasing levels of sub-literacy and the loss of longterm attention spans among our youth. It’s a serious problem, and the highly pixelated alternatives to the written page grow daily. Indeed, there’s always another “must-see” Netflix series being released. Meanwhile, countless good books go unread, and our minds and souls grow flabby.

As Christians, this should concern us. Why? Because we are people of the Book, not people of the screen. And it’s in God’s book, the Bible, that the Law and the Gospel are revealed to us by God’s Spirit. Through the Word of the Law we recognize our sin and misery, and through the Word of the Gospel we learn the good news of salvation by grace, through faith, in Jesus Christ. Therefore, the main reason we want to be good readers is so that we can read, believe, understand, and apply God’s Word — the Word of life and grace. The words, sentences, paragraphs, chapters, and books of the Bible lead us to God. In addition, we want to read good books to help us faithfully cultivate Christian piety and strengthen biblical conviction in our rapidly degenerating culture. Dearest Christ Church family, if ever we needed to recover godly reading it is now.

I hope that you will take up the 2024 reading challenge. The books can be purchased through Amazon, Banner of Truth Trust, Reformation Heritage Books, and any number of other booksellers.

Below are my monthly book recommendations. They include books on doctrine, church history, devotion, biography, and Christian worldview. Some of them will be more challenging to read than others. There is both joy and toil in the reading of quality books. Tolle Lege!

December
Dennis Johnson, Journeys with Jesus: Every Path in the Bible Leads Us to Christ (Phillipsburg, NJ: P&R Publishing, 2018) Paperback, 163 pgs.

Description: From beginning to end, the main message of the Bible is the Gospel — the good news that God so loved the world that He sent His Son to earth to live, die, and rise for guilty sinners. In this excellent book, the author shows how a right biblical interpretation will always ultimately lead us to the Savior.

Happy Reading!

Exciting News! | Colton Dempsey https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/exciting-news---colton-dempsey- https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/exciting-news---colton-dempsey-#comments Fri, 06 Oct 2023 14:00:00 -0400 https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/exciting-news---colton-dempsey- “I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.” — Psalm 111:1

Christ Church family — I am delighted to announce that after much prayer and deliberation the session of Christ Church voted to hire Colton Dempsey as a full-time Pastoral Intern of Outreach and Administration. He will begin his new position on October 10th. We thank God for leading Colton to serve Christ Church during this wonderful season of growth and blessing.

Colton and Hillary moved to Charleston in the fall of 2019, in part, to sit under the ministry of Word and sacrament at Christ Church Presbyterian. Prior to moving to the low country, Colton served in full-time pastoral ministry from 2015-2019 at Grace Bible Church in New Jersey; first as assistant pastor, and then as interim pastor. The Dempsey’s theological convictions changed and matured during that time, however, and they desired to be a part of a Confessional Presbyterian church. They wanted to grow in their understanding of the Reformed Faith. They have been faithful and active members of Christ Church since October 2020.

For the past 2.5 years Colton has been working in telecom sales for Comcast Business. Over the last several months, however, his sense of calling to gospel ministry intensified. After numerous conversations with me, our session, and other trusted friends, Colton has decided to pursue his theological training at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary through their excellent and engaging online program. In addition, he has agreed to serve as a full-time pastoral intern at Christ Church.

Colton’s primary duties will be outreach and follow-up with our many visitors, as well as key aspects of church administration. He will also assist with public worship, teaching, and shepherding the flock under my mentorship. You will learn more about Colton and his new position on a future podcast episode of Between the Times, where Gabe Williams and I will interview Colton about his new role.

We praise God for Colton and Hillary, and their four precious covenant children, Toryn, Gabriel, Owen, and Cora. Take time to pray for the Dempseys. Encourage them as they commence this new and exciting season of life and ministry.

An Indissoluble Bond https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/an-indissoluble-bond https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/an-indissoluble-bond#comments Fri, 23 Jun 2023 14:00:00 -0400 https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/an-indissoluble-bond The sacred love-bond that we have with God is indissoluble. It cannot be broken or destroyed. This is not because of the strength of our faith or the quality of our works, but solely due to God’s sovereign grace in Christ. In union with Christ, our salvation is perfectly secure. The gospel, therefore, is a profound comfort to suffering believers who might be questioning God’s presence and love in their lives. Indeed, we are reminded that whatever we are called to endure in this life of exile, we can be confident of at least two things: 1) God is working all things together for our good (read: sanctification); and 2) Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ (Rom. 8:28; 35). Dear believer, your future is secure because the One who holds the future also holds you. Does this reality not stir your heart? Does it not motivate you to glorify God in all things? The love-bond that we have with God, through Jesus Christ, is the glorious and assurance-building message of Romans 8. It’s gospel truth that puts wind in the sails of our faith. For I am sure that … [nothing] will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38a, 39b).

Vacation Bible School

The Faith Expedition Vacation Bible School was a smashing success. Close to fifty children and over a dozen workers gathered at Christ Church for three days of learning, growing, and fun. Our sanctuary was transformed into ancient Egypt, largely due to the creative talent of Mrs. Jamie Pepin, and Mrs. Kristin Gee. The children memorized Scripture, sang Bible songs, made unique crafts, and enjoyed recreation and snacks. It was an outstanding week. Many thanks to all those who served the children this week as team leaders, instructors, registrars, nursery workers, song leaders, photographers, and snack helpers. I am always struck by the unique gifts, talents, and servant-heartedness of our membership during VBS week. Moreover, I’m powerfully reminded of the privilege and responsibility we have to disciple our covenant children. “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD” (Ps. 127:3).

Tithes and Offerings | Summer Giving

The summer months are often filled with vacation and travel. Sometimes changes in our schedules can effect our overall giving. As our giving has been a little down recently (see pg. 15), I want to encourage us all to remember to set aside the first fruits of our income for the work of the kingdom. God is faithful.

Rest & Rejuvenation

My family is very much looking forward to a couple of weeks of vacation at the beginning of July. The Christ Church pulpit will be filled by two very gifted preachers while I am away. Please pray for a restful, refreshing, and rejuvenating time. It is my greatest honor and privilege to be your pastor.

A Wonderful Celebration https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/a-wonderful-celebration https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/a-wonderful-celebration#comments Fri, 09 Jun 2023 11:00:00 -0400 https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/a-wonderful-celebration Dearest Christ Church Family,

The 10th Anniversary Celebration truly was a banner day! Together we raised an Ebenezer stone to commemorate God’s grace and faithfulness to our congregation over the past decade. May this celebration be etched on our hearts and minds for years to come, ever reminding us to “Hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful” (Heb. 10:23).

On behalf of our leadership, I would like to offer sincere thanks to all those who helped to make our 10th Anniversary so special. Many thanks to Mr. Nathan Guthrie, who served not only as the chief organizer and point person for the celebration, but also exercised his artistic talents by designing the beautiful Christ Church 10th Anniversary shield which appeared on the front of last week’s bulletin. You will also have an opportunity to order swag with this 10th anniversary shield, (link will be sent out via email). Many thanks to Mr. Jake Earle, Mr. Matt and Mrs. Jamie Pepin (A/V and photos), Mrs. Marla Payne and Dr. Matt Watson (slideshow), Mr. Andrew Pankratz (commemorative plaque), the deacons and other volunteers, the Kitchen Crew, and Miss Rachael McIntosh for serving in numerous ways. Also, did you see the flower arrangements? Amazing! Many thanks to Mrs. Helen Royal and the Flower Ladies for arranging the beautiful flowers for the table settings at Alhambra Hall.

The Lord is faithful! May His ineffable love and faithfulness foster in us a renewed zeal to glorify His name and reach our neighbors and the nations for Christ.

Your Pastor, Servant, and Friend,

Pastor Jon

Great Is Thy Faithfulness https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/great-is-thy-faithfulness https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/great-is-thy-faithfulness#comments Fri, 02 Jun 2023 15:00:00 -0400 https://www.christchurchcharleston.org/blog/post/great-is-thy-faithfulness On June 9, 2013 we opened the doors to the small chapel of First Scots Presbyterian Church on Meeting Street, and hosted our first Lord’s Day worship service as a church plant of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). The historic mainline church graciously permitted us to make use of their lovely chapel and courtyard for the summer months. Rev. Ross Hodges (who served Christ Church for 6 years as an Assistant Pastor) and I had been planning for months. But on this beautiful summer evening we officially launched Christ Church Presbyterian. By God’s sovereign grace, what started as an idea and a prayer became a reality.

We weren’t sure who would attend the opening worship service. If a couple dozen showed up we would have been thrilled. To our surprise, the 110 seat chapel filled up before the service began! Many others stood for the entirety of the service in the two adjacent rooms. The atmosphere was electric. Several from supporting churches around the southeast travelled in to attend. What may have been most memorable, however, was the singing. The Psalms and hymns were raised with such joy and volume that one could barely hear the accompanists! I preached Christ Church’s first sermon from John 3:16. My aim was not only to unpack the true nature and riches of the Gospel of grace, but also to set forth our commitment to make the biblical Gospel the foundation of our message, mission, and ministry at Christ Church Presbyterian. It’s a commitment that we unashamedly and unapologetically maintain to this day. For the gospel is the power of God unto salvation for everyone who believes (Rom. 1:16).

The first service propelled us into a Christ-centered ministry of worship, discipleship, and evangelism in the Charleston area. The Lord was moving powerfully in our midst. Many were showing interest in the work, attending services, and being impacted by the ministry. In the fall of 2013 we moved to St. Johannes Lutheran Church on Hasell Street in downtown Charleston. After only a couple of months, we relocated over the Cooper River Bridge to Moultrie Middle School in Mt. Pleasant. It was at the middle school that we began a new Lord’s Day schedule of morning and evening worship. Moultrie Middle would be our home for the next five years. Set up and take down was a labor of love for many during these early days, and we continued to see the Lord’s hand at work in the lives of many couples, families, and students. Monthly women’s fellowships, men’s and women’s Bible study, VBS, MUSC & Friends Weekly Bible Study Fellowships, Christmas Conferences, a Summer Mission Team to Peru, and many other things filled Christ Church’s calendar from its earliest days.

In 2016 we ordained our first elders, Dr. Scott Buchanan and Mr. Keith Hester. We thus became a fully constituted church of the PCA. Since then the Lord has raised up five ruling elders and twelve deacons— all godly men devoted (according to their Biblical calling) to serve, teach, and shepherd the flock of God. In addition, we welcomed a new assistant pastor, Rev. Michael Bauer, who served for three years before moving to Virginia to help organize a new PCA church plant. The Lord has blessed us over the years with strong and godly leaders!

In 2020, the Lord provided a new home for Christ Church on Wando Park Blvd in Mt Pleasant. After a major renovation led by Mr. Jake Earle, Mr, Ralph Charles, Mrs. Cathy Paterson, Mrs. Kristin Gee, and several others, we hosted our first worship service in January of 2021. In 2022 we hired Miss Rachael McIntosh, our Director of Media and Communications. She has been an extraordinary blessing to the church. Since our early days we’ve continued to make mature disciples through Reformed worship, weekly studies, monthly fellowships, small groups, biblical evangelism, hospitality, and loving fellowship. We are being conformed more and more to the image of Christ through the efficacious means of grace, and lifelong — no, eternal — relationships for the glory of God.

Beloved members of Christ Church, what can we say to these things?! God has been so good to us. So very good to us! Therefore, may this ten year anniversary compel us afresh to praise God for His grace and faithfulness! But not only that! May it move us live for His glory with greater gratitude, zeal, and fidelity. And may it drive us to reach our neighbors and the nations with the gospel that we so dearly cherish.

It has been an indescribable joy and honor to serve as your pastor for the past decade. Thank you for being so kind, encouraging, and supportive to me and my family over these many years. There is no place I’d rather be! Let us celebrate God’s faithfulness today. He alone is worthy of our praise.

Your pastor, servant, and friend,

Pastor Jon
